Matthew 7

I am confused by verse 6. What is it getting at?

v. 6 "Do not give dogs what is sacred; do not throw your pearls to pigs. If you do, they may trample them under their feet, and then turn and tear you to pieces."

As I was reading it just didn't seem to fit.

I think that it is dealing with how we treat things from God. If we don't hold onto them, then things could turn out bad. I think the verse is very odd. It seems completely out of context from what the previous 5 verses were about and the verses after. I did read in my commentary, that it was in this chapter because the author of Matthew didn't have any other place to put it. It was important to the author to add it. It don't fit thought. The last few chapters are very organized and direct. Chapter 7 is just a little less organized then the previous.

After doing a little more research on the verse, if found this.

"Teaching should be given in accordance with the spiritual capacity of the learners." The dogs was used because dogs on the street were held in low esteem.
